Searching for Ideas
Sitting down and promising oneself that a great book will spill forth from their hearts and minds to the page is a great step but inspiration often finds us when we are far from the computer. We are inspired by feelings, themes in our, fears, the beauty in the world, relationships, aspirations, and all that is around us every day. When we are in a place where the air and the light strike just right it is a transportive moment when and where characters speak as if it is their experience. These moments and characters may not yet have a story but we seek to save them. A moment running through a cold rain, might have us all imagining we are racing not in a parking lot but in an endless driving rain where there is not choice but to go through it, people depend on our actions. A day in nature discovering some gorgeous place with some unexpected expected element such as a tidal marsh river, a hint of a Fibonacci spiral, the light difference from beach to cozy inlet pond, the fallen trees of a recent storm, the rugged trees of the coast might encourage us to ask which characters would know this landscape, who would have been shaped by it? But inspiration is not just in the world but also from books, moments, memories, dreams, music history, and more. I would like to use this space to celebrate inspiration!
